Challenge-Solution
Business Initiative: Small machine shop automates the reordering process
The production manager at a small Midwestern machine shop was overwhelmed with the task of ordering supplies for his staff. He knew he needed a real tool crib, but how do you implement a tool crib with little to no budget and no staff.

Challenge:
Rapid growth over the years created an environment where all the staff just grabbed whatever they needed, there was no inventory control system and no accountability or tracking on what was being used. This caused the production manager to perform a physical inventory on the supplies almost every night to avoid costly stock outs. Because of the fast pace environment, he was rarely able to start until after hours. This caused even more head aches as he was unable to communicate with his suppliers until the next business day. An automated reordering system was needed but he had a very limited budget.

Solution:
The web-enabled TouchVend machine was the low cost solution that he was looking for. Its simple system set up and low cost provided a 100% secure inventory control and reordering system that he was able to access from work or home. He could review reports on consumption / job costing and lead times from vendors from anywhere he had an internet connection. The touch screen based interface also allowed his users to search by item, description or classification, and even display a picture of the item as well as notes on how to use it. This was key to the systems success as many of his staff did not know what the item codes were. Stock out and late nights ordering tools became a thing of the past, and management believed that the system had a payback of about 12 months.
