Business Initiative: Midsize manufacturing company halts the loss of precision gages
A mid-size defense manufacturing company was losing from $6,000-$10,000 a month in precision measuring tools from an honor-based
gage lab. Management knew it could solve the problem by manning the gage lab on all three shifts. Unfortunately, corporate
would not allow any additional head count.
Challenge:
Cut the loss of gages immediately while maintaining a high level of availability of the tools to the workforce, to
insure quality control on the plant floor. Additionally, increase visibility of gages on the floor to improve the
ability to maintain good gage calibration recall procedures. The current system provided a calibration recall
procedure but could not give the system administrator any location on where the gage was.

Solution:
The AutoLocker provided 100% accountability of not only who had taken or returned a gage but also what department and work
center they were from, as well as what job and part number they were working on. Additionally, the gage calibration software
notified in real time any gage that fell out of calibration. If the gage was in a locker, it would refuse to open its door.
And, if it was on the floor, the system administrator would be instructed on who had it and where it was. Management figured
with the improvements to quality control and the total elimination of gage losses, the system paid for itself in 60 days.
