Business Initiative: Kaizen leads to cost effective automation of tool crib
During a Kaizen, a mid-size manufacturing plant came to the conclusion that automating their tool crib could free up precious resources while reducing inefficiencies related to the tool crib. The challenge would be doing this with a minimum amount of cost and labor.



Challenge:
The company had a significant problem with inaccurate inventory levels on hundreds of items that later created shortages and work stoppages on the production line. This was do to the fact that the tool crib was manned only on the day shift. As the crib was open on second/third shift, it was very difficult to enforce discipline to record what was taken when users could come and go as they pleased.


Solution:
The RoboCrib carousel system proved to be the answer - it provided for access to over 1500 different SKU numbers in less than 10 seconds while providing for 100% accountability. The touch screen user interface let the users search for products they needed by item code, description or class. And, when that was not enough information, they could also see a digital picture of the item before they dispensed it.

The new system:
All but eliminated stock outs and work stoppages while at the same time reducing the time workers spent hunting for tools. This savings coupled with the elimination of the manned crib resulted in a 6 month pay on the system.
